“Celebrating the Gift of Names: A Special Week of Ceremony for Our Children in November, we came together for a special event—our 19th Annual Naming Ceremony, where over 40 children and their families received spirit names. It was a day filled with meaning, connection, and celebration, led by Shkaabaawis (Gerard Sagassige), who brought his years of wisdom and gentle guidance to help make the ceremony so meaningful. For our children, receiving a spirit name is much more than a tradition—it’s a gift that connects them to their identity, their family, and their culture. These names are chosen with care and carry a sense of purpose, strength, and belonging. They serve as a lifelong reminder of who we are, where we come from, and the teachings that guide us on our journey. Throughout the ceremony, Gerard shared stories and teachings, helping everyone—especially the children—understand the importance of their names and what they represent. Families felt the warmth of the community as we came together to celebrate this important milestone in the children’s lives.

“This year’s ceremony was a beautiful reminder of the role we all play in nurturing our children’s sense of self. By giving them their spirit names, we’re grounding them in the values, wisdom, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. It’s about showing them that they are deeply rooted in something bigger than themselves—a culture and community that will always support and guide them. To all the children who received their spirit names, we are so proud of you! And to the families, Miigwech for bringing your love and trust to this ceremony. These moments remind us of all the importance of keeping our traditions alive for future generations. Miigwech to Gerard for leading us with such care and to everyone who made this day so special.”
